LESSON MODULES

Each of the lesson modules introduces you to new statistical concepts and data analysis commands using Stata. You will want to use these modules sequentially. Here, though, is a guide to what you can expect to find in each module:

MODULE 1 - INTRODUCTION TO SURVEYS

In module 1, there is an introduction to surveys. This module does not actually use Stata, but rather provides some useful background on: what is a survey, what are variables, what are surveys used for, and some details of the BAIS data set.

MODULE 2 - GETTING STARTED WITH STATA

In module 2, you begin to use Stata to actually look at the data in the BAIS data set. In this module, you will learn how to load a data set, examine the contents of the data, and manage the data set as necessary.

MODULE 3 - UNDERSTANDING DISTRIBUTIONS

In module 3, you are introduced to distributions. Using Stata you will explore distributions using frequency distribution tables, as well as graphs. Additionally, you will learn about outliers and missing values.

MODULE 4 - MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY AND VARIABILITY

In module 4, you learn how to summarize distributions of variables in a meaningful way using measures of central tendency and variability.

MODULE 5 - BIVARIATE ANALYSIS (CROSS TABS)

In module 5, you will examine the relationship between two variables (bivariate analysis) using crosstabs. This will enable you to examine the presence and strength of the relationship between two variables.

MODULE 6 - SIMPLE REGRESSION ANALYSIS

In module 6, you will be introduced to regression analysis. In this module, we will focus on simple bivariate regression and relate the key ideas to correlation analysis.

MODULE 7 - MULTIPLE REGRESSION ANALYSIS

This module introduces multiple regression analysis. The emphasis here is on understanding the several underlying influences on a variable of interest. Special attention is paid to several public policy issues from Demography, Sociology, and Public Health.

MODULE 8 - DISCRETE OUTCOME ANALYSIS

In module 8, we extend the discussion of regression to logit, probit, and linear probability models. Again, the module is driven by policy examples from many different fields of social science.

These modules are intended to be used sequentially, so let's start with Module 1. To start the first module, simply click "Module 1" on the navigation bar to the left.
