COURSE MATERIAL

All of the web course content may be found here (the course survey data and the survey questionnaire used to collect the data). Prior to doing anything you will need to download some of these materials to your personal computer. It is strongly recommend that you follow the steps specified below.

In the steps to come, you will have the opportunity to download the dataset and survey. First, however, you will need to decide where you want to save these files. We recommend creating a directory titled "Workshop". One way to create the new course directory is to use the Windows program "Windows Explorer". You can use any name for your directory, but throughout this website we will consistently refer to the directory containing all course materials as c:\Workshop. In any case, please remember the name and location of the new course directory you create.

STEP 1 -- Download Data

The first step is to retrieve the BAIS data files. The data you are about to download is from the Botswana AIDS Impact Survey (BAIS). The data file contains detailed community, household, and individual level data from the BAIS collected in 2001. Due to the size of the BAIS data set, the data file has been compressed in the ".zip" format. You can uncompress/unzip the data using a number of freely available utilities. (Click here to obtain a zip utility to uncompress the file if such a utility is not available on your personal computer.)

To download the data set, click on the link below labeled "BAIS Data File" using the right mouse button. A target menu will pop up with several options, select the "Save Target As.." option. You will have the opportunity to save the (zipped) data file to your hard drive. We recommend saving the data file in the folder C:\Workshop. Regardless of where you choose to save the data please make a note of the files location on your hard drive.

STEP 2 -- Download Survey

Once you have successfully downloaded the data file, the second step is to download the original survey questionnaire. To download the survey questionnaire, click on the "BAIS Survey Files" link below.  This file is also in the zip format, and will need to be unzipped prior to use. Once unzipped, you will find three files - the household questionnaire (workshop.supplement.xls), the community questionnaire (community.doc), and the individual questionnaire (individual.doc). Again, we recommend saving the survey files in the folder C:\Workshop.

STEP 3 -- Begin Lesson Modules

Finally, once you have downloaded both the data and the survey files, you should unzip these files to the C:\Workshop directory. Once you have completed this step you are ready to begin the course lessons. To begin the lessons click on the "Lesson Modules" link on the navigation bar. Once there, you will be instructed on how to use the date and questionnaire files in conjunction with the lessons we have developed.

GOOD LUCK!
